About Assembling Objects

Assembling Objects is unique among ASVAB sections because it tests spatial reasoning rather than knowledge. You are shown disassembled parts and must determine which assembled figure they would create, or you are shown connection points and must identify the correct assembled configuration. On the CAT-ASVAB, you have approximately 15 minutes for 15 questions. While AO does not contribute to the AFQT score, it is used by the Navy for certain ratings and contributes to some composite scores. This section rewards practice because the question types are very specific and learnable.

Study Tips for Assembling Objects

Learn the Two Question Types

AO has two types: assembling parts into a whole, and connecting points on shapes. Practice both types separately to build familiarity.

Use Process of Elimination

Look for obvious mismatches first. If a piece in the answer doesn't match any part in the question, eliminate that answer immediately.

Practice Spatial Rotation

Many questions involve rotated or flipped pieces. Practice mentally rotating shapes to improve your speed and accuracy.
