Before you ship: prepare for the system, not just the workout

The current Air Force recruiting site describes enlisted BMT as a 7.5-week transformation at Lackland. Its preparation page points future trainees to the Delayed Entry Program app, fitness/nutrition preparation, reporting statements, study material, and the official packing list.

What happens during the 7.5 weeks?

AirForce.com currently organizes BMT as Week 0 through Week 7. The exact daily sequence can move, but the official week pages give a reliable mental model:

Week 0

Arrival & in-processing

Squadron/MTI assignment, clothing and equipment issue, dorm and drill basics, haircut, immunization/blood draw, initial phone call, pay/BX processing, PT, UCMJ, entry control and drug testing.

Week 1

Learn how to function as a trainee

Reporting/saluting, medical and dental appointments, rank recognition, weapon familiarization, individual/flight drill, initial PT assessment, physical training and Air Force professional lessons.

Week 2

Build the foundation

ID card issue, weapons handling/maintenance, drill, living-area appraisal, human relations, leadership/followership, Air Force history and continuing PT.

Week 3

Grow mentally and physically

Clothing issue, tactical/weapons application, financial readiness, nutrition, dress and appearance, PT appraisal and broader military-citizenship/professional lessons.

Week 4

Become a complete Airman

Photos, weapons mechanics, SAPR training, Law of War, career progression/quality of life, dress-and-appearance appraisal, drill and OPSEC/joint-awareness study.

Week 5

Readiness checks

Weapons/drill/military-skills progress checks, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, the BMT fitness test, FEST, CATM preparation and Air Force fitness-program instruction.

Week 6

PACER FORGE & end-of-course work

The official BMT FAQ places PACER FORGE in the sixth week and describes it as a scenario-based deployment exercise. The FAQ also says the end-of-course written exam occurs during this phase.

Week 7

Graduate & transition

Graduation practice and ceremony, departure briefings, CAC/assignment verification and final transition work before technical training.

Week summaries are deliberately high-level paraphrases of current AirForce.com week pages and the official BMT FAQ. Training content and sequencing can change.

Fitness: separate “USAF fitness scoring” from “BMT graduation”

A common mistake is treating a general Air Force PFRA calculator as a BMT graduation calculator. The current AirForce.com Week 5 page explicitly lists a BMT Fitness Test, while Second Air Force can issue supplemental training-specific guidance. That means the safest product design is:

General USAF calculator = readiness signal. Use it to understand current 2-mile/push-up/sit-up/WHtR scoring. Do not present its result as a promise that a trainee will graduate BMT.

For the current general USAF scoring tables, use our 2026 Air Force Fitness Calculator. For an official BMT decision, follow your MTI/training-chain instructions and current BMT guidance.

Graduation: what family should know now

The current official BMT graduation site says events are held on Wednesday and Thursday at JBSA-Lackland. Wednesday includes the Airman's Run and Coin/Retreat events at the Pfingston Reception Center; the graduation parade is on Thursday at the parade field. The site says graduates normally move to their respective technical-training locations on Friday after BMT events.

WednesdayAirman's Run + Coin & Retreat. Check the current official schedule/flight map before traveling.
ThursdayGraduation parade. Liberty, weather and local instructions can change.
Visitor ID: the official BMT site currently states that guests age 18+ entering the installation must present a REAL ID-compliant license/ID or an acceptable alternative such as a passport/enhanced ID, together with the required guest pass. Installation-access rules are security policy and can change—verify the official BMT site immediately before travel.

For family: design around changing information

Guest passes, flight maps, liberty, inclement-weather plans and ceremony times are operational details. The official BMT site updates them more frequently than third-party guides can. For that reason this page does not freeze a future flight's exact ceremony time into an SEO article.

The bigger journey: ASVAB → MEPS → DEP → BMT → Tech School

BMT is not an isolated event. The useful mental model is a pipeline: qualify academically and medically, enter the accession process, prepare during DEP, complete BMT, then move into career-specific technical training. FreeASVAB's goal is to support the high-information-friction parts of that journey without pretending to replace recruiters or official orders.
